Austrian tourism officials debating plans for 'Sound of Music' museum

SALZBURG, Austria - Austrian tourism officials are debating plans to build a "Sound of Music" museum devoted to the popular musical and film.

The von Trapp family featured in the 1965 movie and Broadway musical lived in Salzburg before fleeing Austria at the start of the Second World War.

Salzburg officials say a museum containing memorabilia from the film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer could draw 140,000 visitors a year.

But not everyone is enthusiastic about the idea.

More than 600 neighbourhood residents have signed a petition rejecting a museum. They told the City Council on Wednesday that they fear a museum would jam local streets with tour buses.
