Austrian tourism officials debating plans for 'Sound of Music' museum

SALZBURG, Austria - Austrian tourism officials are debating plans to build a "Sound of Music" museum devoted to the popular musical and film.

The von Trapp family featured in the 1965 movie and Broadway musical lived in Salzburg before fleeing Austria at the start of the Second World War.

Salzburg officials say a museum containing memorabilia from the film starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer could draw 140,000 visitors a year.

But not everyone is enthusiastic about the idea.

More than 600 neighbourhood residents have signed a petition rejecting a museum. They told the City Council on Wednesday that they fear a museum would jam local streets with tour buses.

Live Review: True Colors Tour in Wantagh, NY

When Cyndi Lauper [ tickets ], pop diva and tireless advocate for GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transgender) equal rights, sets out to put on a musically diverse benefit for perhaps the most discriminating concert audiences around, she shoots for the stars. And after a quarter century working in and around GBLT causes, she's got the connections to pull together a stellar contingent of acts that will shape shift their way around the country under the rainbow-colored banner of "True Colors Tour."If the tour's second stop at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre on Long Island June 1--the first day of Gay Pride Month--provides any evidence, this will be among the tours to see, and be seen at this summer no matter what your orientation. First there's the dual message: it takes an inclusive village to raise a discrimination-free society; and it takes motivated political forces to ensure the rights of everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, are protected. That message rang loud and clear from the stage as several members of the Long Island True Colors entourage stepped forward mixing some activism with what was certainly a show with the potential to please almost every type of mainstream musical consumer except for opera fans--and there is always next year. The five-hour lineup at Jones Beach included the talents of Louisiana born and Brooklyn bred Mary McBride. While you might be tempted to peg her as a country-flavored artist, her brief opening set was more of a mix of indie-folk and rock, with a capable band and powerful vocals extracting substantial applause from the early birds dotting the arena.Hailing from the Bronx, and the Dominican Republic, Kat DeLuna hit the stage next with piped-in beats and a pair of nimble male dancers. She warmed the growing crowd considerably, bouncing and radiating through a too-brief set of hot dance and pop ditties that included her popular single, "Run The Show."What DeLuna brought in terms of thumpy R&B, Toronto's own The Cliks brought in high voltage crunch. As tattooed and transgendered singer/guitarist Lucas Silveira wailed, bandmates Nina Martinez, Jen Benten and Morgan Doctor executed a flawless set that at times hearkened back to early Joan Jett and the Runaways, and at other times showcased rhythmic shades of another Canadian precursor, Rush.Their turn included "Complicated," and "Oh Yeah," from the band's 2007 release, "Snakehouse," and their raucous cover of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River," which had audience members of every persuasion on their feet, singing and even dancing along to the head banging chorus.Indigo Girls [ tickets ], who are only scheduled for a few stops on True Colors, were fan favorites in their stripped down duo format. Complimented on a couple of numbers by keyboard and accordion player Julie Wolf, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers hit all the buttons from the rousing opener, "Galileo," to "Pendulum Swinger," from their latest offering "Despite Our Differences," to the intensely powerful, "Kid Fears."Just before the Indigo Girls set, True Colors MC Carson Kressley of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" fame proved himself to be the consummate improviser, turning what was supposed to be a brief five-minute set change into a nearly 20-minute stream of consciousness rant that had the crowd rolling in the aisles before he finally got a green light to introduce the duo.Cyndi Lauper took the stage after a brief intermission sending out a compelling message about the importance of registering, and voting. She implored those less inclined, who may have shown more enthusiasm for voting to support their favorite "American Idol" performer to get registered at one of the booths positioned around the venue, and follow through come November. Lauper then brought on her long-time friend Rosie O'Donnell, who turned what was expected to be a stand-up routine into a series of touching stories. She waxed sentimental about the influence of her late mother, and the inspiration she received when one of her fellow PTA parents--a Japanese immigrant--said she adopted O'Donnell's gregarious delivery to become a more communicative school teacher. As darkness started falling on Jones Beach, pulsating lights illuminated America's favorite party band, The B-52's [ tickets ]. Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson and Keith Strickland were in fine form mixing hits including "Private Idaho," "Love Shack," and a highly energetic "Rock Lobster," with a few numbers from their latest release, "Funplex.""Juliet of the Spirits," was the standout among The B-52's new offerings, while robot-voiced Schneider's attempts to inject any liveliness into "Love in the Year 3000," fell flat with a crowd that kept yelling for more classics. Maybe a nugget like "Party Out of Bounds," would serve the band better than one too many new cuts, which just served to drive folks out to the concessions.Lauper closed out the show saving the best for last. Her hour-plus set mixed in a few palatable tracks from her soon-to-be-released album project. But instead of just trotting them out from the comfort of stage, she used the new material as platforms to launch herself into the audience. Her foray into the front few rows early on gave way to a trip all the way back to the cheap seats, much to the thrill of camera snapping fans who drank in this interactive interlude with glee. New material like "Rocking Chair" was amped up with O'Donnell backing on percussion and handling the rhythmic duties admirably.Standing atop a Statue of Liberty torch, much like the True Colors Tour logo itself, Lauper belted out "Change of Heart," before returning to ground level to continue a hit fest that included a rollicking "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," a plaintive "I Drove All Night," and the beautiful "Time After Time," with sparse autoharp and cello accompaniment. Most of the evening's talent joined Lauper for an encore of Sly Stone's "Everyday People," and the tour theme song, "True Colors," before the audience was released into the salty evening air.The True Colors Tour continues with various support acts depending on the region. Look for Joan Jett, Wanda Sykes, Deborah Cox, Joan Armatrading, Tegan and Sara, Margaret Cho and Girl in a Coma to spice up the bill on various stops before the tour wraps in early July.

Aerosmith - Tyler In Rehab To Recover From Foot Surgery Not Drugs

AEROSMITH rocker STEVEN TYLER has cleared up rumours about his health, insisting his recent decision to check himself into a rehab facility follows a series of secret foot injuries.

Reports have suggested the former hellraiser, 60, has been struggling with his drink and drug demons again - but Tyler states the stories are wildly exaggerated.

He insists he's recovering from painful surgery, not detoxing.

In a statement, Tyler says, "The doctors told me the pain in my feet could be corrected but it would require a few surgeries over time.

"The 'foot repair' pain was intense, greater than I'd anticipated. The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy were traumatic (and) I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet."

Ironically, Tyler's bandmate Joe Perry is currently recovering from knee-replacement surgery. The guitarist went under the knife in March (08) and is now walking around with the aid of a cane.

Suzanne Ciani was one of the number one and finest woman artists to make a name for herself in the existence of electronic euphony. Ciani earned a Masters academic degree in makeup from the University of California at Berkeley, where she studied with electronic pioneers Max Matthews, John Chowning, and Don Buchla. In 1975 she moved to New York, where she got involved in the Soho art scene, and also worked with minimalist Philip Glass. She began to hit the large time with the establishment of Ciani Musica, Inc., one of the frontmost commercial production companies in the land. Ciani after expanded into film scoring and gained recognition for her work on Lily Tomlin's The Incredible Shrinking Woman as well as the award-winning feature article documentary Mother Teresa. Ciani's calling as a transcription creative person, however, took a more indirect route. Her 1982 Japanese release Seven Waves became an underground hit, prompting its American release by Private Music in 1984. Then Speed of Love came along, which, with its intriguing synthesiser work balanced by inviolable melodies and pop sensibilities, helped define contemporary subservient music and the burgeoning genre of new age. Ciani recorded steady for Private through the 1980s and into the next 10, issuance the Grammy-winning Hotel Luna ('86), Neverland ('88), History of My Heart ('89), and the 1990 solo pianissimo Pianissimo. In 1994 Ciani effected the Seventh Wave impression, and issued the orchestral album Dream Suite. Two eld later Pianissimo II apppeared, followed by a live album in 1997. The title track of the 1999 album Turning featured vocals from Chyi-yu. Ciani took a break after third instalment in her Pianissimo solo pianissimo series, released in 2001. But she returned quatern age afterward with the challenging studio apartment effort Silver Ship.

Avril Lavigne expecting first baby?

Singer Avril Lavigne and her husband, Sum 41 star Deryck Whibley, are reportedly expecting their first child together.
According to OK! magazine, the couple were spotted shopping at three baby stores on Monday.
Lavigne and Whibley reportedly visited Kitson for Kids, Lisa Kline Kids and Petit Tresor during their shopping trip.
Reports said that the couple picked up a cheetah diaper bag and baby AC/DC t-shirts at the shops.
Previous media reports had suggested that Lavigne was trying to disguise a visible baby bump.
The singer's representative has not yet commented on the reports, although Lavigne herself dismissed pregnancy reports in early January.

Glasto 2008: David Gilmour snubbed over Jay-Z

Bizarre's Smart Gordon knows what the kids want, and it isn't booze, weapons or any manner of illegal activity. It's actually 1960s prog-rock pioneers Pink Floyd. According to Gordon, the reason this year's Glastonbury festival has failed to sell out is because the organisers snubbed an offer from the Floyd's David Gilmour to play.

Wistfully painting a scene of "one hundred thousand smiling punters gripped by communal euphoria as Dark Side of the Moon, one of the greatest British albums ever, is performed by one of its creators during a headline slot on the Pyramid stage", Smart Gordon is nothing short of appalled that Michael Eavis turned down Gilmour's offer to play because he wanted to appeal to younger people. In opting for Jay-Z instead, Gordon says Eavis is "dangerously out of touch with a public - youngsters and all - who would have delighted in some Floyd action".

Quite how much peril Eavis is in isn't made clear. We're guessing all would be remedied if only he'd follow the advice of, say, Bizarre's Smart Gordon, who we all know is so hip it hurts, rather that trying to lure kids to Glastonbury with little more than rap music and a knackered sense of what's cool.

We're relieved to hear that all this criticism over Jay-Z daring to play a festival in Somerset hasn't got to the rapper himself. Quite the opposite, in fact. According to the Mirror's 3am team, who've spoken to a "source", his Glastonbury plans include "a top-of-the-range chopper to fly him in with champagne and the works". Those "works" are said to include "pre-Glasto parties for which he has ordered in £300 bottles of celeb champagne Armand de Brignac".

If this all sounds a little excessive to those whose greatest wish at Glastonbury is to have a decent pair of wellies, 3am suggests it's all part of a policy. "After hearing Tom Cruise and Will Smith laid it on at David Beckham's Welcome to America party last year, he wants a piece of the action," their source is quoted as saying. Which is odd, as 1) Jay isn't moving to England like Becks was to the US and 2) he seems to be throwing the parties for himself. Still, at least you know what to expect from a party for yourself.

Kim Dawson of Kim Dawson's Playlist has been catching up with indie-pop duo the Ting Tings, who haven't forgotten their humble origins just because they've scored a No 1 single. The pair admit to Kim Dawson of Kim Dawson's Playlist that they used to be "pretty ropey" when they played live and that singer Katie White couldn't even play guitar properly. It's all different now though, of course.

And if you need more proof, consider this: the Ting Tings have even got their song Shut Up and Let Me Go on an iTunes advert. You know, the one that goes "I want something UNIGNORABLE!" They didn't do it for the cash though, oh no. It's because the women in the ad fall about much like White. "She only has to walk into a room and she can smash 14 pints on the floor with her bag. It's so cute," says band mate Jules de Martino. Try lifting all that hair out your face, Katie. It may be a hot look, but it's also a darn sight easier to navigate your way round pub tables with fringe-free vision.
